USA Today is releasing its conference-by-conference football rankings following spring practices, and theBig 12 Conference listcame out on May 6.

There were plenty of unknowns and changes for writer Paul Myerberg to consider when rankingIowa State football, which brought in head coach Jimmy Rogers in December to replace longtime leader Matt Campbell, who left for Penn State.

Most of the roster left following Campbell's departure, so theCycloneshave perhaps the most uncertainty of any Power Four program entering the 2026 season.

As a result, ISU ranked last in the conference at No. 16, just behind Colorado.

"Keep your program handy.Iowa State’s roster was decimated by attrition occurring in the wake of former coach Matt Campbell’s departure for Penn State," Myerberg wrote. "His replacement, Jimmy Rogers, has done an admirable job building back up the Cyclones’ numbers. But this remains a program in transition and it's hard to have optimism there won't be a drop in the standard set by Campbell."

Time will tell if Rogers and his staff can overcome such doubts in Year 1.
